What Files Do You Need for a Custom 3D Print?

You can ask for a custom print without already owning a 3D model. What you send determines whether the next step is a printability review or a design discussion. A photo communicates an idea; a mesh file describes geometry.

STL: geometry, with scale to confirm

An STL describes a surface mesh. It generally does not carry dependable units, material selection or color instructions. Include the intended finished dimensions in your brief even if the model looks correctly sized in your software.

A person checks geometry, thin details, supports and print orientation. A file opening successfully is not enough to establish that it can be manufactured or is suitable for its intended use.

3MF: more context, not automatic compatibility

A 3MF can store units, multiple objects and other manufacturing information. Depending on the exporting application, it may include project settings or color assignments. Those settings still need review for our X1 Carbon, materials and four-color AMS.

Send the original model when available and describe the required result. Do not assume another printer’s slicing settings, colors or supports can be used unchanged.

Photographs, sketches and references

PNG, JPG or a PDF reference can begin concept development. A written description should explain the subject, pose or function and the details that matter. Additional modeling may be necessary and may add a design fee.

For a pet keepsake, a clear, well-lit photo and notes about markings help more than a tiny cropped image. For a business display, explain the lettering, logo rights and available space. A two-dimensional reference does not guarantee exact three-dimensional likeness.

Upload limits and rights

The quote form accepts one STL, 3MF, PNG, JPG or PDF file up to 20 MB. If several references are needed, send the most useful starting file and mention the others; the studio can arrange follow-up. Customer uploads are kept privately, not added to the public gallery.

Check the model or artwork license before requesting reproduction. A download or purchase may not permit commercial printing or use of a trademarked character. We decline counterfeit and unlicensed intellectual property.

Include a short production brief

Provide intended use, approximate size, quantity, preferred colors, material preference if you have one, and the date you need the piece. Decorative display work is our focus, not precision or safety-critical engineering.

After reviewing the reference or model, we confirm whether the project fits our capabilities and capacity, then send a free, non-binding written quote. You approve the quote and proof before required payment and production steps.

Request a File or Idea Review

Free, non-binding. A quote request is not an order.
